(CNSNews.com) - In a series of indignant tweets on Thursday, President Trump pushed back on liberal outrage over his comments to ABC's George Stephanopoulos.
I meet and talk to “foreign governments” every day. I just met with the Queen of England (U.K.), the Prince of Wales, the P.M. of the United Kingdom, the P.M. of Ireland, the President of France and the President of Poland. We talked about “Everything!” Should I immediately call the FBI about these calls and meetings? How ridiculous! I would never be trusted again.
In an Oval Office interview earlier this week, Stephanopoulos asked Trump, "Your campaign, this time around. Foreigners -- if Russia, if China, someone else, offers you information on an opponent, should they accept it or should they call the FBI?"
“I think maybe do both," Trump said. "I think you might want to listen. There’s nothing wrong with listening. If someone called from a country -- Norway -- we have information on your opponent – Oh. I think I'd want to hear it.”
“You want that kind of interference in our elections?" Stephanopoulos asked.
“It's not an interference," Trump said. "They have information. I think I'd take it. If I thought there was something wrong, I'd go maybe to the FBI -- if I thought there was something wrong.
“But when somebody comes up with oppo research, right -- they come up with oppo research -- oh, let's call the FBI. The FBI doesn't have enough agents to take care of it. But you go and talk honestly to congressmen -- they all do it, they always have. That's the way it is. It's called oppo research.”
Trump on Thursday tweeted that his "full answer is rarely played by the Fake News Media. They purposely leave out the part that matters."
The president also singled out Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), saying they took information from Russian operatives and didn't call the FBI.
"The fact is that the phony Witch Hunt is a giant scam where Democrats and other really bad people, SPIED ON MY CAMPAIGN! They even had an “insurance policy” just in case Crooked Hillary Clinton and the Democrats lost their race for the Presidency! This is the biggest & worst political scandal in the history of the United States of America. Sad!"
Politicians on both sides of the aisle condemned the idea of any president accepting negative information about an opponent without calling the FBI. Democrats and liberal media operatives condemned Trump harshly and personally, which is a daily occurrence.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told Fox News's Laura Ingraham Thursday night that Trump gets "picked on" for everything.
Ingraham asked McConnell about Trump's response to the question about taking information about an opponent from foreigners: "Do you have a problem with that answer? Because the Democrats seem to be taking that and saying, ah-ha, see, we told you so. Now it's on to impeachment."
"They just can't let it go, Laura," McConnell responded. "I said weeks ago, case closed. We got the Mueller report, the only objective evaluation that will be conducted. Nobody has any confidence that the Democratic House is going to engage in any kind of appropriate oversight.
"The case is closed. Why don't we move on and solve the border crisis and approve the president's USMCA, the new trade deal with Mexico and Canada? We have work to do."
Ingraham followed up:
"Do you think the president made a mistake in the way he answered that question when he said, maybe I would, maybe I wouldn't? You know, I'd hear them out. Would you answer the question that way?"
"He gets picked at every day over every different aspect of it, but the fundamental point is, they're trying to keep the 2016 election alive and the investigation alive when the American people have heard enough," McConnell said.
"They got the Mueller report, they would like for us to do some business. I would ask the Democrats in the House this: Is there anything they're willing to do other than harass the president for the next two years? Anything at all?"
