(CNSNews.com) - Conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh says what happened inside the FBI and the Justice Department after Donald Trump won the presidency was a "silent coup" by unelected people from the "Obama intelligence agencies."

People such as Andrew McCabe and Rod Rosenstein "took it upon themselves to overthrow the election results of 2016," while ignoring the "real collusion" between the Clinton campaign and the Russians.

"The Mueller investigation, I believe, is a cover-up of all of that. It's to distract everybody's attention," Limbaugh told "Fox News Sunday."

"We're losing sight of what happened here," Limbaugh continued:

People unelected simply because they don't like a guy's hairstyle or like where he came from decided the American people's decision was invalid and began a systematic process to get him thrown out of office. This is a silent coup.

These guys, if you ask me, ought to be the ones in jail. They ought to be the ones under investigation. What they have done, working with agents from the Obama intelligence agencies, is simply unprecedented. This is a kind -- this is one of the greatest political hoaxes that has ever been perpetrated on the people of this country, certainly in a couple of generations.

McCabe, the former acting deputy FBI director, told CBS's "60 Minutes" that in the chaotic and stressful days after President Trump fired James Comey, he and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein "talked about why the president had insisted on firing the director and whether or not he was thinking about the Russia investigation, and did that impact his decision."

As part of that conversation, Rosenstein "offered to wear a wire into the White House," McCabe said:

"He said, 'I never get searched when I go into the White House. I could easily wear a recording device. They wouldn't know it was there.' Now, he was not joking. He was absolutely serious," McCabe said of Rosenstein. "And, in fact, he brought it up in the next meeting we had.

"I never actually considered taking him up on the offer. I did discuss it with my general counsel and my leadership team back at the FBI after he brought it up the first time."

McCabe said Rosenstein also raised the issue of possibly invoking the 25th Amendment to remove the president:

"I didn't have much to contribute, to be perfectly honest, in that-- conversation," McCabe said. "So I listened to what he had to say. But, to be fair, it was an unbelievably stressful time. I can't even describe for you how many things must have been coursing through the deputy attorney general's mind at that point. So it was really something that he kind of threw out in a very frenzied, chaotic conversation about where we were and what we needed to do next."

Limbaugh said this is the "deep state" in action:

"And it's all of Washington, D.C., and it's all arrayed against Donald Trump, and it's designed to get his approval numbers down maybe into the 30s or 20s. They can then go to him and say, Mr. President, you've lost all support. You have no support.

"Or then -- you know, this has been an effort to impeach him. The -- the effort that was underway for collusion didn't work. Now the Mueller report that may not happen is going to be used to continue to leak things that may be in it," Limbaugh said.

"They're going to ratchet this up for the next election and we're going to face two more years of this collusion stuff. And it's -- I think it's just -- it's something people need to be paying a heavy price for, for what they've done on the investigatory side of this."

In two tweets on Monday morning, President Trump wrote:

-- Wow, so many lies by now disgraced acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe. He was fired for lying, and now his story gets even more deranged. He and Rod Rosenstein, who was hired by Jeff Sessions (another beauty), look like they were planning a very illegal act, and got caught.

-- There is a lot of explaining to do to the millions of people who had just elected a president who they really like and who has done a great job for them with the Military, Vets, Economy and so much more. This was the illegal and treasonous 'insurance policy' in full action!
