(CNSNews.com) – House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Friday that she is “proud” of the "directive" from the Obama administration that says federally funded schools must allows students to use restrooms and locker rooms according to their "gender identity" rather than their biological sex.

“I’ll just say that I’m very proud of the administration for the directive that they have given to the schools across the country – the Justice Department and the Department of Education,” Pelosi said during a press conference on Capitol Hill.

“It is nothing new. It is just a guidance to these schools,” she said.

The Department of Education and the Justice Department issued a joint letter today advising schools how the administration will interpet Title IX's prohibitiong of "sex discrimination" in federaly funded schools.

"The Departments interpret Title IX to require that when a student or the student's parent or guardian, as appropriate, notifies the school administration that the student will assert a gender identity that differs from previous representations or records, the school will begin treating the student consistent with the student's gender identity," says the letter.

"Gender identity," the letter says, "refers to an individuals internal sense of gender. A person's gender identity may be different from or the same as the person's sex assigned at birth."
