News Release

WASHINGTON - On the eve of Vice President Albert Gore's formal announcement that he will seek the Democrat nomination for the presidency, Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) presented the first of its monthly "Gorespin" awards to taxpayer activist Nathanael K. Pendle of Clemmons, North Carolina.

For bringing to our attention the Gorespin titled "In the Name of the Father," Pendle was awarded a double-bladed ax for clearing land. He also was presented a copy of "Love Story" autographed by other people who also claim they were the inspiration for the novel.

Pendle brought to ATR's attention the following report from the National Review:

"In his speech to the NAACP in Detroit on Sunday (4/25/99) night, Vice President Al Gore said that his father lost re-election to the Senate in 1970 because he supported civil-rights legislation. (It should be noted here that Al Gore, Sr. did vote for the 1965 Civil Rights Act, but voted against the 1964 Civil Rights Act - so apparently it was acceptable for black people to vote for Al Gore, Sr., but not eat at the same restaurant....) ...His opponent, Bill Brock, ... painted Gore as an out-of-touch liberal and in the closing days of the campaign pounded him with negative ads focusing on gun control and school prayer. The Republican won with 52 percent. Al Gore, Sr., was a liberal and a loser, not a martyr." -NR Washington Bulletin.

"Since we launched the Gorespin section of our website last month, we have had hundreds of taxpayers contact us to bring to our attention the foibles, misstatements and outright lies of Albert Gore. It is obvious that taxpayers across the country are dubious of Albert Gore. This seems to be due, in part, to the fact that he is the first man in the history of our country to run for the presidency that already has a tax named after him," said Grover Norquist, president of ATR.
