(CNSNews.com) -- On Thursday, the Inspector General at the Department of Justice (DOJ) sent a criminal referral to the DOJ concerning former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, a step Judicial Watch applauded, stating that the "wheels of justice finally caught up with McCabe for repeatedly lying under oath."
McCabe's potential criminal acts also indicate that the "Clinton email investigation was a sham and the Trump-Russia investigation is an abuse," said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton in a statement.
In 2015-16, McCabe was in charge of the Clinton email/private server investigation. In 2015, his wife, Jill McCabe, received nearly $700,000 from two Democrat PACs, one run by longtime Clinton confidante Terry McAuliffe. Despite this apparent conflict of interest, McCabe did not recuse himself from the Clinton inquiry until one week before the 2016 presidential election.
Last week, a report from the DOJ Inspector General's Office documented that McCabe made false statements -- "lacked candor" -- to FBI investigators on four occasions, three of which were under oath. McCabe violated FBI Offense Codes 2.5 and 2.6. He also leked information to the Wall Street Journal, which the OIG said "violated the FBI's and the Department's media policy and constituted misconduct."
"The wheels of justice finally caught up with McCabe for repeatedly lying under oath to investigators," said Tom Fitton in Judicial Watch's April 19 statement. "It’s high time America had some accountability for his misconduct."
"Judicial Watch uncovered documents about McCabe’s conflicted handling of the Clinton investigation that should have triggered action months ago," he said. "Judicial Watch’s finds on FBI and McCabe corruption generated irresistible public pressure for accountability."
"McCabe’s potential criminal acts, on James Comey’s watch, are further proof that both the Clinton email and Trump-Russia investigations were irredeemably compromised," said Judicial Watch. "The Clinton email investigation was a sham and the Trump-Russia investigation is an abuse."
"Unfortunately, the cover-up continues, the Justice Department and FBI are playing shell games and refusing to turn over McCabe text messages in Judicial Watch FOIA litigation," said Fitton.
In addition to uncovering McCabe's apparent conflict of interest in relation to the Democrats' payments to his wife, Judicial Watch also "forced out documents that show that McCabe used FBI resources for his wife's campaign."
