( -- Border Patrol officers captured an illegal alien in California who had previously been convicted of sex offenses in the United States and deported, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

On Nov. 3, Border Patrol agents arrested Gildardo Gonzalez-Santiago, a 30-year-old Mexican national, in Calexico, Calif. They had noticed him climbing over a border fence at the Calixico port of entry and running north.

When they caught him, the agents determined he was illegally in the country.

During processing, Border Patrol discovered that Gonzalez-Santiago had a misdemeanor rape conviction from 2008 in Orange County, New York on his record. For that crime, he had been sentenced to time served, two months in jail, and was required to register as a sex offender until 2028.

"Record checks also revealed that Gonzalez-Santiago was previously deported in October of 2018," said the CBP in a statement. "The man will be criminally prosecuted for Re-Entry after Removal as a convicted sex offender," said the agency.

The CBP further reported that in Fiscal Year 2019 so far -- the fiscal year started on Oct. 1, 2018 -- "El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents have arrested and removed four convicted sex offenders attempting to enter the United States illegally."
