(CNSNews.com) - In a video conference call with the NASA International Space Station, President Donald Trump on Monday congratulated astronaut Peggy Whitson for spending 534 days in space - and counting - more than any other American.
During the call, Whitson explained that she and the other astronauts cleaned up their urine and drank it, to which the president responded, “Better you than me.”
“Water is such a precious resource up here that we also are cleaning up our urine and making it drinkable, and it’s really not as bad as it sounds,” Whitson said.
“Well that’s good. I’m glad to hear that. Better you than me,” Trump said.
The president congratulated Whitson on breaking the record and asked how she felt.
“That’s actually a huge honor to break a record like this, but it’s actually an honor for me basically to be representing all the folks at NASA who make this space flight possible and who make me setting this record feasible, and so it’s a very exciting time to be at NASA. We’re all very much looking forward as directed by your new NASA bill,” Whitson said, referring to the president signing the NASA Transition Authorization Act of 2017, which “authorizes the development and execution of a long-range plan for deep space human exploration.”
The bill is “the first comprehensive NASA authorization passed by Congress in more than six years,” according to the White House website.
“We’re excited about the missions to Mars in the 2030s, and so we actually physically have hardware on the ground that’s being built for the SLS rocket that’s going to take us there, and of course the hardware being built now is going to be for the test flights that will eventually get us there, but it’s a very exciting time, and I’m so proud for the team,” Whitson said.
