( - Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) reacted Wednesday to an illegal immigrant confessing to the murder of Iowa State University student Mollie Tibbetts, telling CNN’s “New Day” that the country needs an effective immigration system “that focuses on where real problems are.”

“I’m so sorry for the family here, and I know this is hard not only for the family but for the people in her community, the people throughout Iowa, but one of the things we have to remember is we need an immigration system that is effective, that focuses on where real problems are,” the senator said.

Warren said she visited the U.S.-Mexico border and saw where children had been separated from their mothers and there was no unification plan.

“Last month, I went down to the border, and I saw where children had been taken away from their mothers. I met with those mothers who had been lied to, who didn’t know where their children were, who hadn’t had a chance to talk to their children, and there was no plan for how they would be reunified with their children,” she said.

“I think we need immigration laws that focus on people that pose a real threat, and I don’t think mommas and babies are the place that we should be spending our resources. Separating a momma from a baby does not make this country safer,” Warren said.

Meanwhile, Angel mom Mary Mendoza, mother of police Sgt. Brandon Mendoza, who was killed by an illegal immigrant, told Fox News host Tucker Carlson that she was “disgusted” by Warren’s comments.

“What I want to say to her is stop lying to the American people,” Mendoza said. “You don’t care what is happening to the victims of illegal alien crime, because if you did, you would be standing up for us, and you would be doing something about it.

“We have pleaded with these politicians to do something to protect American citizens, and they are ramping up their protection of illegal alien criminals, and I just want to say, there are so many victims, Tucker, and when you think of Courtney Hacking in Texas and her husband and two children were killed, and the illegal alien got two years,” Mendoza said.

“When you think of Sanders Cohen and Carlos Wolf in Maryland, who were killed by the side of the road, and Maryland charged that illegal $140 for each of the men he killed, and that’s the only punishment he got. Is this what an American life is worth?” she said.

Roberto Garza Palacios was charged with negligent driving in the deaths of Cohen, a Maryland fire marshal, and Wolf, an FBI agent.

According to Fox News, Wolf had crashed his vehicle on the highway, and Cohen stopped to help him. Both of them were off-duty at the time. Palazios drove up and swerved to avoid hitting their vehicles and hit the men on the shoulder of the road.

Investigators said neither alcohol, drugs, nor speed were factors in the crash. Negligent driving is punishable by a $280 fine and a three-point loss on a license.

“To our politicians and to our fellow Americans who don’t understand this disgusting narrative that is happening in our country, and this has become political, because it’s the very politicians who are elected into office who are not doing a dang thing about this, and they’re ignoring the American people crying for help, and they’re stepping over dead American bodies in their rush to protect illegal alien criminals,” Mendoza said.
