( – Although Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) said the federal government spends too much money, he also said it was not a matter of eliminating federal departments but of making sure that expenditures don’t exceed the cost of living and taking into account the increase in the average American’s work and lifespan.

At the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, asked the senator, “The federal government spent $4.1 trillion in fiscal year 2018 and ran a deficit of $779 billion dollars. Does the government spend too much money?”

Senator Cornyn said, “Yes, most of it is on automatic pilot, which is the reason why we need to revisit the mandatory spending because that represents two-thirds of all federal spending. We’ve done a pretty good job with the one-third but the two-thirds is on autopilot.

When asked the senator what federal department or agency he would eliminate to cut back on spending, he replied, “Well, I don’t think it’s a matter of necessarily having to eliminate it, it’s making sure the expenditures don’t exceed the cost of living and that we take into account the fact that we are living longer and working longer.”

On July 9, 2019,  the U.S. National Debt was $22.02 trillion. Ten years ago, at the end of the fiscal year – Sept. 30, 2009 -- the national debt was $11.9 trillion. At the end of fiscal year 2000, the national debt was $5.6 trillion.
