(CNSNews.com) -- When asked about the White House's announcement that it is considering removing the security clearances of former Obama administration officials who have accused President Trump of treason and other crimes, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) said he thinks the president is only "trolling people," trying to get a reaction from his critics.

At the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, an MSNBC reporter asked Ryan, “The president has said that he wants to revoke security clearances from some former national security officials who still hold them and have made political remarks -- is it dangerous to go down that road?”

Speaker Ryan said,  “I think he’s trolling people, honestly. This is something that’s in the purview of the executive branch. I think some of these people have already lost their clearances. Some people keep their clearances, it’s something that the executive branch deals with. It’s not really in our purview.”

On Monday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said the president is looking into removing the security clearancees of former CIA Director John Brennan, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, former FBI Director James Comey, former Bush CIA Director Michael Hayden, and former National Security Adviser Susan Rice.

Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) disclosed that he would meet with Trump on Monday and ask him to remove John Brennan's security clearance. Senator Paul also tweeted, "Is John Brennan monetizing his security clearance? Is John Brennan making millions of dollars divulging secrets to the mainstream media with his attacks on @realDonaldTrump ?"

Last week, Brennan had tweeted, "Donald Trump’s press conference performance in Helsinki rises to & exceeds the threshold of 'high crimes & misdemeanors.' It was nothing short of treasonous. Not only were Trump’s comments imbecilic, he is wholly in the pocket of Putin. Republican Patriots: Where are you???"
