( - Retired Army Lt. Col. Allen West, a senior fellow with the Media Research Center and a former congressman, told the National Conservative Student Conference Tuesday that they will not be successful in life if they whine, insulate themselves from the reality of the world, and fear taking risks.

He also stressed that the "pursuit of happiness" in the Constitution means equality of opportunity, not equal outcomes, the latter an ideology pushed by socialists, such as New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“You cannot be successful when you go back on these college campuses if you’re gonna be a wimp, a wussy or a whiner,” West said.

When students from the left side “scream and yell” at students from the right side, such as those in the audience, the conservative students need to stand up and continue fighting for the conservative movement, because it’s greater than themselves, West said.

West also said “pursuit of happiness” in the Constitution allows people to have equal opportunities, something Abraham Lincoln emphasized.

“Each and every one of us have the equality of opportunity. That’s what pursuit of happiness means, because here in the United States of America we believe that wherever you are born, it doesn’t make a difference.” West said. “Where you have come from, it doesn’t make a difference. The only thing that makes a difference is the drive and determination that you have within yourself to go out there and seize that golden ring.”

In reference to Ocasio-Cortez, the 28-year-old Democratic socialist who defeated incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) in the primary, West said, “Here’s a person that’s gonna go and be a representative in the United States Congress…When it comes to a philosophy of government, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has it completely wrong, because she does not believe in equality of opportunity. What she believes in is an equality of outcomes,” West said.
