(CNSNews.com) - On retuning to Los Angeles after attending the synod on the family at the Vatican, Roman Catholic Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles published a column expressing his satisfaction that the final document produced by the synod strongly reaffirmed the Catholic teaching that God designed marriage as the union of one man and one woman for life.

“I am pleased that the final document was strong in affirming the Church’s traditional teaching--that God’s plan for marriage is intended for one man and one woman to be united in love for life,” Archbishop Gomez wrote. “Throughout the document there is beautiful language, drawn from the Scriptures, that describes God’s plan for the family.

“The document also includes strong passages on the importance of families having children, on the sanctity of life and the importance of children as the future of the Church,” said the archbishop.

Archbishop Gomez also pointed out that the document called for defending the elderly and disabled from attempts to legalize terminating their lives.

“There is also urgent language on the need to defend the elderly and the disabled against the rising movement of euthanasia and assisted suicide,” wrote the archbishop. “Sadly, this is also a reality that we now have to face in California.”
