(CNSNews.com) - House Speaker John Boehner reportedly told Republican House members this morning that he intends to resign as speaker and vacate his seat in the House next month.

Boehner became speaker on Jan. 5, 2011, when the House majority that the Republicans won in the November 2010 elections took office.

That was an election in which the enactment of Obamacare by a Democratic Congress--in which Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.) served as speaker--was a central issue. So, too, were government spending and a mounting federal debt.

Rep. Eric Cantor (R.-Va.) became House Majority Leader in January 2011, when Boehner became speaker. Cantor was defeated in the June 2014 Republican primary in Virginia by Dave Brat, an economics professor at Randolph-Macon College.
