Boko Haram Carries Out 'Planned Genocide' Against Christians in Nigeria on Sunday

By Barbara Boland | October 27, 2014 | 2:52pm EDT

Muslim militants from Boko Haram killed 31 Christians while they worshipped on Sunday in Taraba state, Nigeria- part of what Rev. Caleb Ahema of the Christian Reformed Church of Christ called a "planned genocide against Christians by Islamic insurgents."

The attack was carried about by Muslim extremists wearing military uniforms against two churches on October 19, and is one of several that have taken place in the south on Sunday.

"This is the third time that the Muslims have attacked Christians on a Sunday," Ahema said, according to a  report by Morning Star News.

The attack is the seventh that has taken place against Christians since February.  The Nigerian press reports that Boko Haram militants have been assisted by Fulani herdsmen.

As reported earlier this year, nearly as many Christians were killed in Nigeria in the first half of this year as were killed in all of 2013:

Boko Haram and Islamic extremist groups have killed 1,631 Christians in Nigeria in the first six months of 2014 - 91 percent of last year's total number of Christians killed, according to  in the country in all of last year, according to the human rights group Jubilee Campaign.

The pattern is that if you do not do what [the extremists] demand, even if you are Muslim, you become an 'apostate' deserving of death," said Emmanuel Ogebe, manager of Jubilee Campaign's Justice for Jos Project.

"Therefore the difference between Boko Haram's approach to Christian 'infidels' and Muslim apostates is [that] you are killed as a Christian 'just because' your name is Christian - you go to church, etc. - whereas Muslims are generally killed 'for cause,' for example working for the government or refusing to pay extortion taxes to Boko Haram," Ogebe told Morning Star News.

Boko Haram seeks to impose sharia law throughout Nigeria, and is responsible for the increase in Christian deaths this year.

"Muslims seem determined to wipe out Christians in this country," Rev. Ahema said. "What is happening? How come Christians have been attacked seven times now, and it seems as if the country has no good security intelligence gathering network, or that security reports are not being used?"
