(CNS News) -- When asked if President Donald Trump should be afforded the same patience as was given to Democrat Al Gore when he challenged the presidential election in 2000, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said, “This is a completely different situation,” and added, “Republicans have decided that they will not respect the will of the people.”

At the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, asked the speaker, “In 2000, Democrat Al Gore was allowed to press his legal challenge against George W. Bush for 37 days, do you think the same type of patience should be afforded to President Trump in his legal challenges?”

Pelosi said, “In 2000, the delayed ascertainment caused many difficulties, the Bush Administration was outspoken about what was happening in the country. And, as [Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY)] said, this is a completely different situation, we are talking about one state.”

Gore had challenged to vote count in Florida and the case was eventually decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

“It is most unfortunate that the Republicans have decided that they will not respect the will of the people.” Pelosi continued, “And, let me just say, it is like the house is burning down and they just refused to throw water on it.”

“But we are on a path now, the vaccines which were coming out of the private sector, actually the Pfizer vaccine coming out of the private sector, show great promise,” she said.  “And, that promise is to say all the more reason to wear a mask, self-isolate, self-quarantine, and let us work together to get this done.”

“This is like a gift from God to come down and help cure this pandemic,” the speaker concluded, “and as we inoculate against the virus, we also should be inoculating against the injustices that are contained in how it is being spread and the rest.”

The Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine candidate against Covid was announced on Monday and is reported to be 90% effective in preventing COVID-19.
