A new Morning Consult poll shows that 58% of registered voters support using the military with city police forces to address the "protests and demonstrations" that have erupted because of the death of George Floyd.

In the survey, conducted May 31 - June 1, Morning Consult asked, "Would you support or oppose cities taking the following measures to address protests and demonstrations in dozens of U.S. cities in response to the death of George Floyd? Calling in the U.S. military to supplement city police forces." (Table MC11_3.)

Among registered voters, 33% said they "strongly support" the idea and another 25% said they "somewhat support" the idea. That's a 58% majority of support.

Among Baby Boomers, a combined 67% said they either "strongly support" or "somewhat support" using the military with local police to better control the protests.

However, a combined 40% of liberal ideologues said they support the idea while a combined 75% of conservative ideologues said they support it.

Among African Americans, only a combined 37% back the idea of a military/police force to address the protests, and a combined 49% oppose the measure.

Commenting on the poll, Forbes magazine noted that it "showed a large chunk of voters usually associated with the Democratic Party also are open to deploying troops, with 43% of voters under 34, 40% of self-identified “liberals” and 37% of African-Americans saying they’d support sending in the military to help police."

"Since George Floyd’s death while being detained  by Minneapolis Police on May 25, protests have occurred in at least 75 U.S. cities," reported Forbes
