(CNSNews.com) - As presidential tweets go, this one was amusing:
"I promise not to do this to Greenland," President Trump wrote on Monday night, showing a doctored photo of a gleaming Trump Tower in the middle of a coastal fishing village.
Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, is not for sale, Danish officials have insisted:
“Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland. I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was quoted as saying during a visit to Greenland.
President Trump on Sunday admitted what the Wall Street Journal first reported – that he considered the idea of purchasing Greenland from Denmark:
"Well, Greenland, I don't know, it got released somehow. It's just something we talked about. Denmark essentially owns it, we're very good allies with Denmark, we protect Denmark like we protect large portions of the world. So the concept came up and I said certainly, strategically it's interesting. And we'd be interested, but we'll talk to them a little bit. But it's not number one on the burner, I can tell you that."
Trump said essentially, the U.S. purchase of Greenland would be "a large real estate deal." He noted that Denmark supports Greenland "at a great cost." He said may stop in Denmark on his way home from Poland next month.
