Over the weekend, six people were killed and 29 people were wounded by gunfire in Chicago, according to local media there. In addition, the Chicago Tribune reports that 1,800 people have been shot in Chicago since Jan. 1, 2019.
On Sunday, 17-year-old Dontevon Gates was shot and killed in the city's South Side, reported the Chicago Sun-Times. "Gates was hit in the neck and back," said the Sun-Times. "He was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center. A man and two women were also wounded in the shooting."
Also on Sunday, a 27-year-old man was shot multiple times on Chicago's West Side. He died at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
On Saturday, "Donald Ruben was walking in an alley just after midnight in the 9500 block of South University Avenue when he was shot in the head," reported the Sun-Times. "The 60-year-old was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead."
On Friday, a young couple were walking on the West Side when they were shot multiple times. "The person fired several shots, striking the man seven times and the woman three times," reported the Sun-Times. "Both were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where the 34-year-old man was pronounced dead, police said. The 28-year-old woman — struck once each in the chest, back and arm — was listed in critical condition."
According to the Chicago Tribune, 1,800 people have been shot in Chicago since the first of the year.
For comparison, there were 1,196 people killed in "mass shootings" -- four or more people killed by a lone shooter -- in the United States between Aug. 1, 1966 and August 19, 2019, according to The Washington Post.
