Washington Redskins cornerback (CB) Josh Norman, when asked about playing his former team in a post-game interview following the Redskins win over the Carolina Panthers 23-17, quoted a Bible verse after suggesting that “God created us for times such as these.”

“You know, the thing is, you know God created us for times such as these,” stated Josh Norman. “They really have. And we gotta understand, and we know that. And before we went out on the field, it was a great, it was a Bible verse that was quoted when we all came up. It came from Josh 1[:9], and I don’t want to botch it, so I’m going to read it. It was, ‘Have I not commanded you … [to b]e strong and courageous[?] Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.’”

The former Panther CB’s remarks came after the Redskins win over the Panthers and in response to a reporter who asked, “[h]ow much of a motivating factor” it was to have so much “pre-game chatter in the media, amongst fans about going against” his “ex-team?”

Below is a transcript of Josh Norman’s response to the reporter’s question:

Reporter: “Lot of pre-game chatter in the media, amongst fans about going against your ex-team. How much of a motivating factor was that? How well did you want to play against them?

Josh Norman: “You know, during the whole week there was a lot of chatter, so it really is like, gosh. Aw, man. This is coming down.

“But you know, the thing is, you know God created us for times such as these. They really have. And we gotta understand, and we know that. And before we went out on the field, it was a great, it was a Bible verse that was quoted when we all came up. It came from Joshua 1[:9], and I don’t want to botch it, so I’m going to read it. It was, ‘Have I not commanded you … [to b]e strong and courageous[?] Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.’ (NIV)

“And that struck a match in me to be like, ‘Okay, courageous. Be strong.’ Whatever that may come up against us, we know we will be able to, you know, stand the tests of time.

“And we came out there as a unit, all the guys on the field – all 11 guys. It wasn’t one guy. It wasn’t that. It wasn’t this. It was all guys going out there and doing their job. And we did it to phenomenal execution, and I just want to tip my hats off to those guys and really appreciate everything they’ve put into it this week.”

Norman finished the game with four tackles, one assist and had one play defended, according to NFL.com. In the win, the 30-year-old CB also had his first interception of the 2018 season – which he ran back the other way for 7.0 yards – to go along with a forced fumble.
