In a social media post on Sunday, outspoken Christian NFL tight end for the New England Patriots Benjamin Watson implored President Donald J. Trump on behalf of the country that Trump needs to “be OUR leader.”

“Mr[.] President Donald J. Trump, from this moment forward[,] the country needs you to be OUR leader,” wrote Benjamin Watson in a Facebook post. “All of us will never agree on everything but today[,] from you, we need compassion not cruelty. We need humility not pride. We need leadership not instigation. We need hope not insults. We need respect not arrogance. We need justice not favoritism. Your words have the power to restore, destroy, unite or incite. We are at a critical juncture. May God grant you wisdom[,] courage and discernment as you lead.”

Benjamin Watson’s Facebook post followed two mass shootings that took place over the weekend, “one in an El Paso Walmart where 20 people were killed, and one in a Dayton bar, where nine people were slaughtered. Many more were injured in both places,” reported“‘Hate has no place in our country,’ the president said. He said the violence is a ‘mental illness problem,’ and he noted this has been ‘going on for years.’”

According to, the FBI “remains concerned” that “domestic violent extremists” could become inspired by the recent shootings and asked in a statement that “the American public to report to law enforcement any suspicious activity that is observed either in person or online.”
