The U.S. Marine Corps on Friday banned all public displays of the Confederate flag on Marine Corps installations.

“The Confederate battle flag has all too often been co-opted by violent extremist and racist groups whose divisive beliefs have no place in our Corps,” the Marine Corps said in a social media post Friday. "This presents a threat to our core values, unit cohesion, security, and good order and discipline. This must be addressed."

The ban includes bumper stickers, clothing, mugs, posters, and flags, among other things, the Marines Corps Times reported.

“Today, the Marine Corps released guidance on the removal of public displays of the Confederate battle flag,” the Marines tweeted.

The only exception to the ban is for displays where the flag is not the main focus of the display, for example, works of art, educational or historical displays depicting a Civil War battle where the Confederate Battle flag is present, but not the main focus of the work,” the Marines stated.

In addition, state flags which incorporate the Confederate battle flag, state-issued license plates with a depiction of the Confederate Battle Flag, and Confederate soldiers’ grave sites, are exempt from the ban.

Commanders will be inspecting all public spaces and work places, but individual barracks rooms, living quarters, private vehicles, and military housing will not be inspected.
