Speaking at CPAC 2019 on Saturday, nationally syndicated talk show host Mark Levin criticized Congressional Republicans stating that he doesn’t “need lectures” from them about the Constitution concerning the constitutionality of President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration concerning the southern border of the United States.
“The President of the United States has done everything humanly possible to work with the Democrats,” stated Mark Levin. “They don’t want to work with him. The Republicans who are objecting have been in Congress for 412 years and have done absolutely nothing – nothing. I don’t need lectures from Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, or Lamar Alexander about the Constitution, I can tell you that.”
Mark Levin’s remarks come amidst a rift between some Congressional Republicans and the Trump administration over the president’s national emergency declaration. As of the writing of this piece, four Senate Republicans – Susan Collins (R-ME), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Thom Tillis (R-NC), and Rand Paul (R-KY) – have announced that they will vote for a resolution blocking Trump’s move. A February 20th NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll, however, found that 85 percent of Republicans approve of Trump’s national emergency declaration.
In his speech, Levin questioned why lawmakers opposing the national emergency declaration did not also challenge the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), an executive order from President Obama which delayed deportation for individuals who came to the United States illegally as minors.
Below is a transcript of Mark Levin’s remarks from CPAC 2019 on Saturday:
“The President of the United States has done everything humanly possible to work with the Democrats – they don’t want to work with him. The Republicans who are objecting have been in Congress for 412 years and have done absolutely nothing- nothing. I don’t need lectures from Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, or Lamar Alexander about the Constitution – I can tell you that.
“And I don’t need lectures from the phony experts you put on your cable shows and the other phonies – the Democrats – who are plotting DACA, which had no statuatory authority whatsoever, was a law written in the Oval Office and imposed on the American people. I don’t see a single Democrat or Republican demanding the repeal of DACA based on separation of powers and constitutional grounds.
“And for those who use the scare tactic that when Democrats take over they may do this too: The Democrats do all kinds of illegal and unconstitutional stuff when they take over – they don’t need any prodding from us. That’s number one. Number two, they’ say they’ll use it on guns and the Second Amendment. You just heard our man on the Second Amendment. You can’t use the National Emergencies Act or any statue to change the Second Amendment of the Constitution.”
