Speaking at the Urban League Empowerment Center in Ferguson, Mo. with Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-Mo.) on Monday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said “My purpose in politics is about the children.”

Pelosi was pushing for final congressional approval of H.R. 1, the “For the People Act of 2019,” and H.R. 4 the “Voting Rights Advancement Act.”

“This is what this is all about – the children,” stated Speaker Pelosi. “It’s about the future. Thank you for coming today. We’re honored that you’re here,” Pelosi said to a young man in the crowd.

“My purpose in politics is about the children, and one of the honors that I have is to work for the real champion, for our children, Congressman [William] Lacy Clay. Now, Mr. Chairman Lacy Clay. It’s about the children, their health, their education,” she continued.

H.R. 1, which passed the House on March 8, would, according to the bill’s text, “expand Americans' access to the ballot box, reduce the influence of big money in politics, and strengthen ethics rules for public servants,” while H.R. 4 would, according to the bill, “amend the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to revise the criteria for determining which States and political subdivisions are subject to section 4 of the Act, and for other purposes,” which the Supreme Court struck down in 2013.
