President Donald Trump blasted The New York Times Friday for reporting “fake news” in its article claiming he is considering Democrat Jim Webb to be the next head of the Defense Department.

“The story in the New York Times regarding Jim Webb being considered as the next Secretary of Defense is FAKE NEWS,” Trump tweeted, adding that he doesn’t know Webb and never met him:

“I’m sure he is a fine man, but I don’t know Jim, and never met him. Patrick Shanahan, who is Acting Secretary of Defense, is doing a great job!”

On Thursday evening, The New York Times made the claim in its article, “Jim Webb emerges as candidate for Defense secretary:

“Jim Webb, the iconoclastic former Democratic senator from Virginia who served as Ronald Reagan's secretary of the Navy, is under consideration for Defense secretary, according to an administration official with knowledge of the process.

“Webb would be an eye-opening choice as a member of the opposing party who briefly ran for president in 2015.”
