The dispute over Supreme Court nominee Bret Kavanaugh helped Democrats and hurt President Donald Trump in the midterm elections, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said Sunday.

Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union With Jake Tapper,” Sen. Schumer said he believes Republican and suburban voters sided with Democrats because of the Kavanaugh issue:

“The bottom line is, you know, the Kavanaugh dispute, I think, helped us more than it hurt us. It’s one of the reasons we won the House so decisively. It’s one of the reasons we won governorships in so many other states, because suburban voters, who are traditionally Republican, came to our side.

“And, if the coalition — the old Democratic coalition – can add suburban voters to it and continue to focus on issues like health care, which matter to working class Americans throughout the country, we’re going to win.

“West Virginia, the state that Trump won by more votes than any other, other than Wyoming, Joe Manchin, despite President Trump’s efforts, won. And he focused exclusively on health care. The issue of health care, of infrastructure and jobs will resonate in rural America, in suburban America and urban America and the way it helped us in 2018, it’s going to help us here.

“I think the president lost more votes because of the Kavanaugh issue than gained throughout the country.”

But, South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey disagrees, dubbing his party's wins in the midterms "Kavanaugh's Revenge":

Sen. Graham took to Twitter last Wednesday morning to rename the “#KavanaughEffect” as "#KavanaughsREVENGE" – and to attribute Senate Democrats’ losses to their smear campaign against Trump. Graham points out that the only Democrat who voted for Kavanaugh’s confirmation won by a very narrow margin, which he might not have enjoyed if he had voted against Kavanaugh:

“What has been referred to as the #KavanaughEffect should actually be called: #KavanaughsRevenge.”

“Virtually all Senate Democrats running in Trump states – who voted against Brett Kavanaugh – were defeated. Their constituents held them responsible for being part of a despicable smear campaign orchestrated by the left. #KavanaughsRevenge”

“Liberal Democratic Senators and activists efforts to destroy Brett Kavanaugh ended up destroying Red State Democrats. Hopefully this resounding rejection of the smear campaign by voters will make it less likely that this will occur again in the future. #KavanaughsRevenge.”

“Finally, the lone Democrat who voted for Brett Kavanaugh – West Virginia’s Joe Manchin – won reelection by three points. I’m confident that if he had voted NO, he would have lost his race too. #KavanaughsRevenge”
