Former FBI director James Comey warned Democrats on Twitter Sunday not to “rush to the socialist left,” adding “this president and his Republican Party are counting on you to do that exactly.”
Comey’s warning to the Democrat Party comes just days after Comey urged all Americans who “believe in this country’s values” to vote for Democrats in the November midterm elections.
Comey wrote in a tweet: "Democrats, please, please don’t lose your minds and rush to the socialist left. This president and his Republican Party are counting on you to do exactly that. America’s great middle wants sensible, balanced, ethical leadership."
Former Obama administration officials harshly criticized Comey for his advice. “Last time you practiced politics it resulted in a fiasco of historic proportions,” said Ronald Klain, former chief of staff to Vice President Joe Biden and Vice President Al Gore.
“We got this covered. No one is asking for your advice. As we saw during the campaign, your judgment isn’t great! All the best, everyone,” said former spokesman for President Barack Obama’s National Security Council Tommy Vietor.
Comey has also recently criticized Republican leaders in Congress, saying they had “proven themselves incapable of fulfilling the Founders’ design that ‘Ambition must … counteract ambition.’” The quote comes from fifty-first Federalist Paper, in which James Madison advocated for a balanced separation of powers in the federal government.
Comey wrote in a tweet: "This Republican Congress has proven incapable of fulfilling the Founders’ design that 'Ambition must ... counteract ambition.' All who believe in this country’s values must vote for Democrats this fall. Policy differences don’t matter right now. History has its eyes on us.”
