( -- On Wednesday afternoon, about 4:30 p.m., a majority of Senators voted "not guilty" on the two articles of impeachment brought by the Democrats in the House against President Donald J. Trump.

On Article One, abuse of power, the Senate voted 52-48. Only one Republican, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), voted guilty along with all the Democratic senators.

On Article Two, obstruction of Congress, the vote was 53-47 along party lines.

To remove a president from office through impeachment requires a two-thirds majority, or 67 votes.   The Democrats did not persuade any Republicans, excluding Romney, a long-time critic of Trump, to join their side and vote guilty.

After the vote, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway tweeted, #AcquittedForever." Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said, "We all knew [President Trump] was not going to be removed from office.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), tweeted, "We have a #Verdict: President @realDonaldTrump has been acquitted by the U.S. Senate on both Articles!"

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) said, "We've just witnessed a miscarriage of justice on the floor of the United States Senate."

In his remarks before the final vote, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said, "Once President Trump realized he got caught, he tried to cover it up. Madison and Washington were right. There's no greater subversion of our democracy than for powers outside our borders to determine elections within For an American president to deliberately solicit such a thing—blackmail a foreign country to help win an election—is unforgivable."

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) tweeted a video of himself tearing up the articles of impeachment and stating, "acquitted for life."

Conservative author and pundit Ann Coulter tweeted, "What will the Democrats bore us with next?"

Judge Jeanine Pirro tweeted, "Thank god for level headed Senators who acquitted @realDonaldTrump ... and I’m not talking about you Mitt."

Self-described socialist and MSNBC host Lawrence O'Donnell tweeted, "Impeachment was more than worth it just to hear @RepAdamSchiff prosecution of @realDonaldTrump  & to watch @MittRomney  take his place in history. America needs to hear this."

Only three presidents have been impeached and forced to face a Senate trial: Andrew Johnson in 1868, Bill Clinton in 1998, and Donald Trump in 2019-20.  All three were acquitted and not removed from office.

In a statement, the White House said, "Today, the sham impeachment attempt concocted by Democrats ended in the full vindication and exoneration of President Donald J. Trump. As we have said all along, he is not guilty. The Senate voted to reject the baseless articles of impeachment, and only the President’s political opponents – all Democrats, and one failed Republican presidential candidate – voted for the manufactured impeachment articles.

"In what has now become a consistent tradition for Democrats, this was yet another witch-hunt that deprived the President of his due process rights and was based on a series of lies.  Rep. Adam Schiff lied to Congress and the American people with a totally made up statement about the President’s phone call.  Will there be no retribution?

"Speaker Nancy Pelosi also lied to the American people about the need to swiftly pass impeachment articles they dreamt up, only to sit on them for a month before sending over to the Senate.  In the Senate, the Democrats continued to make their political motivations clear – Rep. Schiff proclaimed the issues 'cannot be decided at the ballot box' – proving once again they think they know better than the voters of this country.

"This entire effort by the Democrats was aimed at overturning the results of the 2016 election and interfering with the 2020 election.

"Throughout this wholly corrupt process, President Trump successfully advanced the interests of the United States and remained focused on the issues that matter to Americans.  He spent his time achieving real victories for the people of this country, and the Democrats – once again – have nothing to show for their fraudulent schemes. The President is pleased to put this latest chapter of shameful behavior by the Democrats in the past, and looks forward to continuing his work on behalf of the American people in 2020 and beyond."
