(CNSNews.com) – One hour before House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced that she was calling for articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, the president on Thursday dared House Democrats to impeach him “fast” so there can be a “fair trial in the Senate” and the country can get back to business.
Trump criticized Wednesday’s House Judiciary Committee impeachment hearing, saying the “Do Nothing Democrats had a historically bad day.”
“They have no Impeachment case and are demeaning our Country. But nothing matters to them, they have gone crazy. Therefore I say, if you are going to impeach me, do it now, fast, so we can have a fair trial in the Senate, and so that our Country can get back to business,” he tweeted.
“We will have Schiff, the Bidens, Pelosi and many more testify, and will reveal, for the first time, how corrupt our system really is. I was elected to ‘Clean the Swamp,’ and that’s what I am doing!” the president added.
After Pelosi’s announcement, Trump tweeted: “The Do Nothing, Radical Left Democrats have just announced that they are going to seek to Impeach me over NOTHING. They already gave up on the ridiculous Mueller ‘stuff,’ so now they hang their hats on two totally appropriate (perfect) phone calls with the Ukrainian President.”
The president warned that impeachment “will be used routinely” against future presidents, which is not what the founding fathers envisioned.
“This will mean that the beyond important and seldom used act of Impeachment will be used routinely to attack future Presidents. That is not what our Founders had in mind. The good thing is that the Republicans have NEVER been more united. We will win!” Trump tweeted.
White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said Pelosi and the Democrats “should be ashamed,” because Trump “has done nothing but lead our country - resulting in a booming economy, more jobs & a stronger military, to name just a few of his major accomplishments.
“We look forward to a fair trial in the Senate,” she tweeted.
The White House issued a statement, saying, “At this morning’s press conference, Speaker Nancy Pelosi could have finally announced a vote on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement that would immediately help America’s farmers, ranchers, businesses, and workers; or outlined a plan to work with the President to lower prescription drug prices; or addressed our Nation’s infrastructure.
“Instead, Speaker Pelosi did exactly what she always does – ignore the needs of the American people and advance her selfish political desires. Democrats’ sham impeachment is a blatant, purely partisan attempt to overturn the results of a free and fair election. By their own admission, Democrats say they have to ‘impeach the President’ because they cannot defeat him at the ballot box,” the press secretary said in a statement.
“Democrats in Congress have clearly abused their power. Democrats in Congress have lied to the American people. Democrats in Congress have made a mockery of the law. How many Democrats will join her driving right off the cliff with this illegitimate impeachment hoax?” Grisham added.
“Speaker Pelosi’s instruction to advance this impeachment process – one that has violated every precedent - moves this Country toward the most partisan and illegitimate subversion of the Constitution in our history.
Meanwhile, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel issued a statement, calling the impeachment effort by House Democrats “the ultimate abuse of power.”
“The Founders began the Constitution with 'We the People' for a reason. Pelosi wants to negate the votes of 63 million Americans, all while denying President Trump due process,” she said, adding that it’s even more reason why Republicans “must take back the House” and re-elect the president.
