(CNSNews.com) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.) issued a statement on Monday condemning President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement and declaring that the “growing climate crisis is the existential threat of our time.”
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had officially notified the United Nations on Monday that the United States was withdrawing from the agreement. The withdrawal will take effect one year from the day Pompeo made the notification.
“As noted in his June 1, 2017 remarks, President Trump made the decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement because of the unfair economic burden imposed on American workers, businesses, and taxpayers by U.S. pledges made under the Agreement,” Pompeo said in a statement about the notification sent to the U.N.
“The growing climate crisis is the existential threat of our time, jeopardizing the health and well-being of every family in every community around the world,” Pelosi said in her own statement. “President Trump’s shockingly-reckless decision to formally pull the United States out of the Paris Climate Agreement is yet another disastrous anti-science, anti-government decision that sells out our planet and our children’s future.”
“While the Trump Administration continues to deny the science, the overwhelming majority of the American people are standing up to demand bold action to fight the climate crisis,” she said.

“The growing climate crisis is the existential threat of our time, jeopardizing the health and well-being of every family in every community around the world. President Trump’s shockingly-reckless decision to formally pull the United States out of the Paris Climate Agreement is yet another disastrous anti-science, anti-government decision that sells out our planet and our children’s future.
“While the Trump Administration continues to deny the science, the overwhelming majority of the American people are standing up to demand bold action to fight the climate crisis. Guided by the energy and activism of millions of young people and the vision and values of our Caucus, our House Democratic Majority has already acted decisively by passing H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act, to keep America in the Paris Agreement and demand a plan of action from the Trump Administration. Moving forward, the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis will continue to work with experts, entrepreneurs, advocates and other House committees to develop innovative solutions to combat the climate crisis.
“Democrats will continue to stand by our commitments to our partners and allies around the world to address this global crisis and protect the people and places we love. We have no time to waste.”
