Miss USA Vs. The Feminists

Blog

Miss Nevada Nia Sanchez, now the newly crowned Miss USA, ruffled the feathers of some feminists when she was asked about sexual assault on college campuses. She said that awareness was important in addressing the issue, but also the need for women to learn how to defend themselves. Sanchez is skilled in martial arts; she has a fourth-degree black belt in taekwondo. But, this didn’t sit well for the feminist wing of America. Elisa Benson, senior community manager for Cosmopolitan, described the Sanchez’s answer as “icky.”

I get that the college sexual assault problem can't be solved in 30 secs but still icky to pretend like self defense is the answer. #MissUSA

She tried to clarify – and I’m being polite with that description.

To the crazies blowing up my TL: I never said self defense isn't valuable. I just said it's not a solution to the college assault epidemic.

Huffington Post Associate Editor Mandy Velez wasn’t happy with Sanchez either.

Let's hope Nevada uses her media tour to reiterate that teaching girls self defense is NOT the best way to protect against assault #MissUSA

She also make it known that her views wouldn't prevent future sexual assaults.

Dear everyone attacking me: self-defense is only a short-term solution, which, obviously when rape is happening is a useful tactic (1/2)

— Mandy Velez (@mandy_velez) June 9, 2014

BUT my tweet was insinuating that we need to fix the problem b4 it occurs, not while its happening. (2/2)

It's like saying the best way to protect against murder is to wear a bullet proof vest. Why should we have to do that? Answer: We shouldn't.

— Mandy Velez (@mandy_velez) June 9, 2014 And, the insanity just continued.

I'm sorry, but women shouldn't need to take self defense classes to protect themselves from rape #MissUSA

Miss Iowa says today's youth are narcissistic followed by Miss Nevada who wants to end rape with self defense classes Really? Sick #MissUSA

— Bergen N. Baucom (@BergenNBaucom) June 9, 2014

Women shouldn't need to learn to protect themselves against rape #missnevada educate and respect yourself as a woman #rapeculture
