(CNSNews.com) - Unlike 2008 and 2012, when Republican presidential candidates John McCain and Mitt Romney lost to Barack Obama among Catholic voters, Donald Trump won the Catholic vote in 2016, according to the national exit poll published by CNN.
Twenty-three percent of voters in this year’s presidential election, according to the exit poll, were Catholic. Trump took 52 percent of this vote, while Clinton took 45 percent. Another 3 percent of Catholic voters said they voted for another candidate or gave no answer.
In 2012, according to that year’s exit poll, 25 percent of voters were Catholic. President Barack Obama took 50 percent of that vote and Romney took 48 percent.
In 2008, according to that year’s exit poll, 27 percent of the voters were Catholic. Obama took 54 percent and McCain took 45 percent, while 1 percent said they voted for another candidate or gave no answer.
