( – Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) does not know how many DUIs an illegal alien can have and still gain legal status under the immigration bill, which is likely to pass the Senate this week.

“Do you know how many DUIs an illegal alien can have and still get legal status under the immigration bill?” asked Murray as she was entering an elevator at the Capitol on Wednesday.

“I do not know exactly that,” Murray said, after pausing for a moment.

“You don’t know?” asked.

“Who are you with?” Murray asked.

“Okay.” then asked, “Did you support the bill, and you don’t know…it’s two [DUIs].  Do you think that’s an appropriate amount or do you think someone with three should be allowed to gain legal status?”

“Well, that’s a pretty arbitrary question,” Murray said.

As the senator answered, a staffer cut her off, saying, “We’ve got to get the elevator to go up.”

Section 3702 of the bill lays out language for “banning habitual drunk drivers from the United States,” but enables illegal immigrants who have two DUI offenses to be put on a pathway to citizenship.  The bill states that aliens who have three DUIs, with at least one conviction after the bill is enacted, are subject to deportation.
