(CNSNews.com) – At an invitation-only press conference on Tuesday at the National Press Club, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards told hand-picked reporters that her organization takes pride in the millions of abortions done at its affiliated clinics around the United States.
“We proudly provide safe and legal abortion,” Richards said at the event.
As CNSNews.com reported earlier, Planned Parenthood clinics did 327,653 abortions in its fiscal year 2014 (which ran from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014), according to Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s latest annual report.
That works out to an average of 37 abortions per hour or nearly 1 every 90 seconds.
Planned Parenthood also received $528.4 million from government grants and reimbursements, which equaled 41 percent of its revenue.
The federal government is prohibited from paying directly for abortions through Title X family planning grants and reimbursements. However, federal funds do pay for Planned Parenthood operations, including the clinics where abortions are performed.
The 327,653 abortions Planned Parenthood reports that it performed in its organizational fiscal 2014 exceeds by 487 the number of abortions it did the previous year.
At the press conference, however, Richards credited birth control and abortion as helping women’s “advancement.”
“Women’s advancement is key to peace. It’s key to political stability and to economic growth and access to full reproductive health care is key to women’s advancement,” Richards said. “First is that access to reproductive health care has completely changed life for women in America.
“The second is that women’s success is key to progress and that an agenda that advances women’s reproductive rights is fundamental to our success both here and around the globe,” Richards said.
“And third is politicians who are trying to erase women’s progress are on the wrong side of history and definitely on the wrong side of the future,” she said.
Richards also said that young women don’t want pregnancy to “determine their destiny.”
“For young women in America, the idea that pregnancy alone would determine their destiny is unthinkable today,” Richards said. “They fully expect that birth control and safe and legal abortion will be available to them — and they should.”
According the latest 990 form filed with the IRS for 2012, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards’ base compensation was $396,138. Including retirement funds and other benefits, Richards’ total compensation was $492,200.
