(CNSNews.com) – Without referring to her by name, President Donald Trump said Friday that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), who came to the U.S. as a refugee from Somalia 23 years ago, is “lucky” to be a congresswoman and that he his “unhappy that a congresswoman can hate our country.”
“You know what I’m unhappy with? I’m unhappy that a congresswoman can hate our country. I’m unhappy with the fact that a congresswoman can say anti-Semitic things,” Trump said, speaking to reporters in the Oval Office.
Omar came under fire in February for tweets she wrote, suggesting that the pro-Israel lobby pays members of Congress to support Israel. “It’s all about the Benjamins baby,” she tweeted at the time. When asked she thought was paying U.S. politicians to be pro-Israel, the congresswoman replied, “AIPAC!” referring to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
“I’m unhappy with the fact that a congresswoman - in this case a different congresswoman – can call our country and our people garbage. That’s what I’m unhappy with. Those people in North Carolina, that stadium was packed. It was a record crowd, and I could have filled it 10 times as you know. Those are incredible people,” Trump told reporters Friday.
“Those are incredible patriots, but I’m unhappy when a congresswoman goes and says ‘I’m going to be the president’s nightmare.’ She’s going to be the president’s nightmare. She’s lucky to be where she is, let me tell you. And the things that she has said are a disgrace to our country,” the president said.
Trump was referring to remarks Omar made when she returned home to Minneapolis. The congresswoman was greeted by supporters upon arrival at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Thursday.
She told the crowd of nearly 100 supporters, “The reality is everybody talks about how [Trump] is threatened because we criticize him, but the reality is he is threatened because we are inspiring people to dream about a country that recognizes our dignity and our humanity.”
“His nightmare is seeing the beautiful mosaic fabric of our country welcome someone like me as their member of Congress,” Omar said. “We are going to continue being a nightmare to this president because his policies are a nightmare to us.”
Trump has been criticized for his tweets calling out Omar and other members of the so-called “squad” – four Democrat congresswomen, who voted against the Department of Homeland Security’s supplemental funding request for migrant detainees at CBP facilities.
As CNSNews.com previously reported, the House passed a resolution condemning the president for tweets described in the resolution as “racist” for telling the congresswoman to “go back” and help fix the places from which they came, “then come back and show us how it’s done.”
“So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run,” Trump tweeted Sunday.
“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!” he tweeted.
