(CNSNews.com) - Kristan Hawkins, president of the pro-life group Students for Life, told CNSNews.com that the Trump administration has transformed the city, because “you can’t walk five feet” in the Department of Health and Human Services “without running into a pro-lifer.”

At last week’s March for Life, CNSNews.com asked Hawkins about the administration’s decision last week to rescind the Obama administration’s guidance restricting states’ ability to take certain actions against abortion providers like Planned Parenthood.

HHS announced on Friday, the same day as the 45th anniversary of the March for Life, that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is issuing “new guidance to state Medicaid directors restoring state flexibility to decide program standards.”

“That’s an amazing accomplishment. This is example of why personnel is policy,” Hawkins said.

“I was giving an interview with NPR today and they were asking, it doesn’t seem like we did a lot. I said, we’ve done a lot. This city has been transformed in the past year. You can’t walk five feet with the Department of Human Services without running into a pro-lifer, and that’s where it counts. Personnel is policy, and today, we are witnessing the fruit of all of that labor,” she said.

“Students for Life is the grassroots arm of the pro-life movement,” Hawkins said, with members on “1200 campuses in all 50 states, high schools, college campuses, middle schools, even medical schools.”

“We are there having those conversations with those most targeted by the abortion industry for business, serving those women in that ultimate moment of crisis in their lives, so that’s what we’re doing with keeping the conversation going about defunding Planned Parenthood,” she said.

“We are not going to let this Senate fail us. They’ve promised to defund Planned Parenthood. They have a president who’s addressing the March for Life today, who has promised to sign legislation into law to defund Planned Parenthood with taxpayer dollars, and we’re insisting that they hold up their end of the bargain,” Hawkins said.

A day prior to the march, HHS also announced the formation of a new Conscience and Religious Freedom Division in the HHS Office for Civil Rights. The division was established to “restore federal enforcement of our nation’s laws that protect the fundamental and unalienable rights of conscience and religious freedom.”

“We’re very excited about this,” Hawkins said. “We’ve had nursing students and medical students for years be discriminated against in school, actually switch their speciality, because they weren’t allowed to continue on in OBGYN obstetrics, because they refused to participate in abortions. This is a huge accomplishment. It’s going to hopefully usher in a whole new generation of pro-life medical professionals.”

CNSNews.com asked Hawkins, “As far as the younger generation’s concerned and the pro-life movement, what are you seeing in terms of the excitement now with this president versus the previous administration?”

“Well now we know we have a pro-life president. We have a pro-life vice president,” Hawkins said.

“Last night, we were approached to have a private roundtable with the vice president with leaders from our Students For Life groups all across the country as far as Alaska, and he was moved, and he kept talking about the courage and the character and the conviction of these young people, and he looked at me at one point and said, where do you find them?” she said.

“And I said, ‘Mr. Vice President, this is just a random sample. We are all over, and we are on fire to abolish abortion. That is our goal,’  and he repeated it last night in front of the whole world. This is the pro-life generation, and we will end this in our lifetime,” Hawkins said.
