(CNSNews.com) – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday that Congress has “important judgments to make” based on President Donald Trump’s tax returns, and forcing the president to disclose his tax returns is necessary to “make those judgments.”

Speaking to reporters at her weekly press conference on Capitol Hill, Pelosi was asked how important it is for the public to see Trump’s tax returns.

“I think overwhelmingly the public wants to see the president’s tax returns, and so they want to know the truth. They want to know the facts, and he has nothing to hide. I’ll just tell you this and go on from there. We have important work to do, and we have important judgments to make, and we need information to make those judgments.

Pelosi then told a story about someone who offered her a retort to the president says Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe is taking too long.

“So I was walking through a kitchen – you know that’s how I usually go to events. I haven’t been to a hotel lobby in I don’t know how long. You actually go through the garage through the kitchen,” she said.

“So it was on Martin Luther King Day in San Francisco, going through the kitchen to go to the event for the breakfast, and one of the waiters, one of the people working in the kitchen said to me, ‘I have to tell you this. I have to tell you this. When the president says that the Mueller investigation is going on too long, you just say back to him, ‘Not as long as your tax audit, Mr. President.’

“I thought those were words of wisdom,” Pelosi said.

When asked what she would say to those who say she hasn’t moved fast enough on trying to demand Trump’s tax returns, Pelosi said, “You have to be very, very careful as you go forward. As I’ve said, we are in our first month, and the committees have been appointed. They have organized. They are prioritizing their work, and in terms of the tax returns, it’s not a question of just sending a letter.

“We have to do it in a very careful way, and the chairman of the committee will be doing that, so I know that there’s impatience because people want to know. That answers the question, but we have to do it in a very careful way,” she added.

As CNSNews.com previously reported, Pelosi introduced legislation last month requiring that the president and vice president and candidates for the presidency and vice presidency release their tax returns.

H.R. 1, which is known as the “For the People Act,” does not, however, require members of Congress or candidates for Congress to release their tax returns.

A summary of the bill says that it includes a section titled “Presidential Tax Transparency.” This section, says the summary: “Requires sitting presidents and vice presidents, as well as candidates for the presidency and vice presidency, to release their tax returns.”
