( – A 24-year-old illegal immigrant confessed Tuesday to killing 20-year-old college student Mollie Tibbetts who disappeared while she was out jogging near her boyfriend’s home in Brooklyn, Iowa, last month.

Cristhian Rivera told police he followed Tibbetts in his car then got out of the car and pursued her on foot. When she threatened to call the police, he chased her down but doesn’t remember what happened next, he said.

Rivera said the next thing he remembered was driving to a cornfield. He noticed an earpiece from headphones on his lap and realized he had put the woman in the trunk of his car. He noticed blood on the side of her head when he went to take her out of the trunk. Rivera led police to Tibbetts’ body in a cornfield on Tuesday.

Rivera was employed by Yarrabee Farms, which is located three miles from where Tibbetts was staying. The owners of the farm included Dane and Eric Lang, according to the Des Moines Register. The Langs are related to Craig Lang, the former president of both the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation and the Iowa Board of Regents and a 2018 Republican candidate for state secretary of agriculture.

Dane Lang said Rivera passed the E-Verify employment verification system, even though he was apparently an illegal immigrant.

"This is a profoundly sad day for our community. All of us at Yarrabee Farms are shocked to hear that one of our employees was involved and is charged in this case," Dane Lang said in a statement. "On Monday, the authorities visited our farm and talked to our employees. We have cooperated fully with their investigation.

"Yarrabee Farms follows all laws related to verifying employees are legal to work in the United States, and we regularly seek outside counsel to ensure we stay up-to-date on employment law matters," the statement read. "We keep records on all employees and have shared that information with authorities."

During a campaign rally in Charleston, W.Va., President Donald Trump commented on the case, saying, “You heard about today with the illegal alien coming in, very sadly, from Mexico, and you saw what happened to that incredible beautiful young woman. Should have never happened. Illegally in our country. We’ve had a huge impact, but the laws are so bad. The immigration laws are such a disgrace. We’re getting them changed, but we have to get more Republicans.”

Trump said Democrats are more protective of illegal immigrants than they are of U.S. citizens.

“The Democrats want to turn America into one big, fat sanctuary city for criminal aliens, and honestly, honestly, they’re more protective of aliens, the criminal aliens, than they are of the people,” the president said.

He touted the work being done on the border wall, saying, “that wall is moving along” and that the administration has $3.2 billion so far for the wall. He said the government needs $5 billion more this year for the wall, “and all of a sudden, it’s going to be finished, and it’s going to be very, very effective.”
