(CNSNews.com) – Abortion advocacy leader Erin Matson attacked the pro-life feminist movement during a webinar on Wednesday, declaring that “women don’t deserve better than abortion.”
Matson spoke at the Why ‘Pro-Life Feminism’ Is Just Not Possible webinar hosted by Reproaction, a pro-abortion group she co-founded and co-directs.
“So one example of a myth is, as feminists for life have stated: 'Women deserve better than abortion'," Matson said. "The fact is that women don’t deserve better than abortion.
"Abortion is a safe medical procedure. Access to abortion affirms autonomy for each woman in this country. Access to abortion puts women in control of their reproductive futures,” she said.
"Lila Rose from Live Action has said that the only true feminist is a pro-life feminist. But the fact is the true feminist recognizes that abortion is an empowering act, that women are capable of making their own choices, and that actively stripping people of decision-making powers is violent."
Matson, who was the youngest state president of a Natioanal Organization for Women (NOW) chapter in the country, added that "this idea that women regret their abortion is a total myth and a lie."
Matson also discussed why she opposes bans on sex-selective abortions.
“Many pro-life feminists have supported legislation that would ban abortion on the basis of the fetus’ sex, while ignoring cultural factors that beget sex-selective abortions, such as the devaluing of women in all societies,” she stated.
Matson also criticized the Susan B. Anthony (SBA) List, a pro-life advocacy group.
She claimed that while suffragette Susan B. Anthony “fought for the right to vote,” the organization named after her is “working against women’s rights to control their own bodies.”
In response, Mallory Quigley, the communications director for SBA List, told CNSNews.com that the suffragists believed in protecting the lives of the unborn.
“The women who fought for suffrage understood that the rights of one group could not be built upon the broken rights of another group,” she said, adding that “the pro-life position is absolutely a pro-woman position.”
Matson also attacked the SBA List for its claim that U.S. abortion laws are among some of the most permissive in the world.
“Ninety percent of counties in the U.S. don’t have abortion providers,” she said, adding that women who want an abortion are faced with long wait times.
But Quigley disagrees.
“The U.S. is only one of seven nations to permit elective abortion after 20 weeks, more than halfway through pregnancy, a point by which science tells us the child can feel pain,” she pointed out.
