(CNSNews.com) - Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young says he would never protest during the national anthem because “the idea to honor the flag and honor the anthem is a really big deal.”

Young made the statement after being asked about the actions of current 49ers player Colin Kaepernick.

“In many ways, the reason he has the right do it is because of all the great things that America is. So, I understand that and recognize that, but more than anything for me, you know, the idea to honor the flag and honor the anthem is a really big deal,” Young said.

“Everybody kind of understands that you have a right in America to do that. I think more than anything, through the weeks, it's been kind of a referendum for each of us and our deep and abiding feelings for the anthem and the flag and I think that's a reminder of how much it means to us.”

“Would you ever have done that?” Young was asked.

“No,” he replied.
