(CNSNews.com) -- CatholicVote.org said the 2018 midterm elections on Tuesday, Nov. 6 were a “devastating blow to left-wing Catholics” and a boon for pro-life Catholics.

CatholicVote.org is a laity-led organization that encourages faithful Catholics and “all good citizens” to “participate in public life, to respect authority, and to obey just laws.”

In his post-election analysis, CatholicVote.org President Brian Burch pointed out that the Catholic vote was split evenly between Republicans and Democrats at 49-49.

“According to exit polling published by the WSJ [Wall Street Journal], the Catholic vote split evenly 49-49 between Republicans and Democrats,” Burch wrote. “This is a devastating blow to left-wing Catholics who have attempted to turn Catholics against the President.”

Burch added that endorsements of Democratic candidates in Tennessee by pop-singer Taylor Swift and the large sum spent on campaigning by Democratic candidate Beto O’Rourke in Texas were “busts.”

“Honest Democrats can’t help but be disappointed today,” Burch said. “The president has been attacked wall-to-wall by the media, Hollywood, and more since the moment he was elected. And yet Democrats were only able to manage a slim majority in the House, while losing more seats in the Senate.”

Burch said the election results worked in favor of pro-life Catholics, whose views on abortion are represented by the Republican Party.

“Before the election, Republicans held a slim majority in the Senate,” Burch wrote. “But they regularly needed the approval of pro-abortion Republicans Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins. No longer. Republicans now have not just a majority, but a real pro-life majority.”

Since the election earlier this week, President Donald Trump has already made moves to further his pro-life agenda. On Nov. 7, the day after the election, the president’s administration issued new rules allowing small businesses and nonprofits with moral or religious objections to exempt themselves from covering contraceptives, abortifacients and sterilization procedures in their healthcare plans. Also on Nov. 7, the Trump administration issued a rule enforcing a law under Obamacare which requires insurers to collect separate payments for abortion coverage.

According to the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, the rule makes consumers aware of “how Obamacare pays for abortion so they can avoid having their hard-earned dollars used to fund the destruction of innocent lives.”

In his analysis, Burch said CatholicVote.org was “pleased” with the outcome of the election.

“Make no mistake: last night was a great night for Catholic voters,” Burch wrote.
