(CNSNews.com) – Although Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is the leader of the Democratic Party in the House of Representatives, on Wednesday President Donald Trump wished Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) a happy birthday on Twitter, calling her the “leader of the Democrat Party.”
In the tweet, Trump said, “Happy Birthday to the leader of the Democrat Party, Maxine Waters!”
Trump’s tweet followed an Aug. 12 interview with Waters on MSNBC in which she said her birthday wish was for a new president.
“I guess now, my biggest birthday wish would be that we’re able to get a leader of this country who represents us, who has a respect of all of our allies, all over the world,” she told MSNBC Live. “Someone who has an appreciation for the Constitution, someone that does not lie every morning when they get up with these tweets. Someone who not only respects women but all of the people, and instead of dividing us, would take leadership to bring us all together.”
“This is the greatest country in the world, but he’s undermining our democracy,” Waters said of Trump. “He is making us ashamed of him and he is being destructive to this democracy.”
“This is a man who’s criticizing NFL players because they’re not doing what he thinks they should do and saluting the flag in the way that he wants them to,” she said. “He doesn’t even know the words to the Star Spangled Banner.”
Waters continued, “And so, he is not truthful, he is a hypocrite, and I would wish that we could remove him from office and go about getting the kind of president that we could all be proud of. And if he’s not impeached, if he cannot be impeached, 2020 is coming up and I believe that American people are going to do the right thing for our country.”
“Stand up for what is right and get rid of this man who is embarrassing us all,” she said.
Pelosi also tweeted, “Happy birthday to my friend and colleague @RepMaxineWaters. You are a strong, courageous and dedicated role model who knows how to get the job done. And that strikes fear in the heart of @realDonaldTrump.”
In June, after White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and her family was harassed out of the Red Hen restaurant in Lexington, Va., Waters called for similar attacks on the Trump administration.
“If you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd and you push back on them, and you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere,” Waters said.
Pelosi later tweeted on June 25, “In the crucial months ahead, we must strive to make America beautiful again. Trump’s daily lack of civility has provoked responses that are predictable but unacceptable. As we go forward, we must conduct elections in a way that achieves unity from sea to shining sea.”
Pelosi also attached a CNN article about Waters’ call for attacks on the Trump administration.
