(CNSNews.com) - In the wake of the terrorist attack in France, where Father Jacques Hamel was murdered in a Catholic Church, the White House has issued a written statement in the name of National Security Council Spokesperson Ned Price that says the United States will not be shaken from its “commitment to protecting religious liberty for those of all faiths.”

The Islamic State has taken credit for the attack on the Catholic church in France and French President Francoise Hollande said today that the group “has actually declared war, and we have to fight this war using all means possible.”

Here is NSC Spokesperson Price’s statement about the today’s terror attack as posted on the White House website:

The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms the horrific terrorist attack today at a Catholic church in Normandy, France.  We offer our condolences to the family and friends of the murdered priest, Father Jacques Hamel. Our thoughts and prayers are with the other victims of the attack as well as the parishioners and community members of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray.

France and the United States share a commitment to protecting religious liberty for those of all faiths, and today's violence will not shake that commitment. We commend French law enforcement for their quick and decisive response and stand ready to assist the French authorities in their investigation going forward.
