(CNSNews.com) - Sen. Kamala Harris (D.-Calif.) sent out a Tweet on Wednesday night featuring a video commentary by Dr. Arshya Vahabzadeh, a child psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital, condemning the policy of separating the children of illegal aliens from their parents when they are caught crossing the border.
“The trauma these children experience will live on for decades to come,” Harris said in her Tweet. “It’s absurd that it needs to be repeated: ripping babies away from their parents to put them in cages is inhumane.”
In his video commentary, Dr. Vahabzadeh says: “The child separation policy is a sad story of dysfunctional borders, distressed children and damaged brains. We are forcefully institutionalizing children, sometimes toddlers, in unpredictable and chaotic circumstances with no clear timeline to resolution.
“We know from decades of research and experience in childhood adversity that these practices are extremely damaging to the short- and long-term emotional and physical health of children,” Dr. Vahabzadeh said.
“This policy has been called zero tolerance, but has manifested an approach that has had zero organization, zero accountability and almost zero support from conservatives, liberals and the entire medical community,” said Dr. Vahabzadeh.
“We can have strong borders and a strong immigration policy without doing this to these kids,” he said.
