(CNSNews.com) - C-SPAN caught Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on hot mic on the Senate floor today saying that he had advised President Donald Trump that he would be “better off” if the “sometimes steps left.”
Schumer told the unidentified colleague to whom he was speaking that Trump “gets that.”
Schumer also said Trump “likes me”—while suggesting he might not like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who joined Schumer and Trump at dinner last night.
“Here’s what I told him: I said, Mr. President, you’re much better off if you can sometimes step right and sometimes step left,” Schumer was caught telling his colleague. “If you have to step just in one direction, you’re boxed. He gets that.”
After last night’s dinner, Pelosi and Schumer put out a joint statement describing their dinner with Trump as “productive” and saying: “We agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides.”
This morning, Trump put out tweets putting a different emphasis on the meeting, saying “no deal” had been made on DACA last night, but then saying: “Does anybody really want to throw out good, educated and accomplished young people who have jobs, some serving in the military? Really!”
"They have been in our county for many years through no fault of their own brought in by parents at young age," Trump tweeted. "Plus BIG border security."
Trump also tweeted: “The WALL, which is already under construction in the form of new renovation of old and existing fences and walls, will continue to be built.”
After Trump’s tweets, Schumer and Pelosi put out a second joint statement saying what Trump said did not contradict what they had said.
“President Trump’s Tweets are not inconsistent with the agreement reached last night,” they said. “As we said last night, there was no final deal, but there was agreement on the following: We agreed that the President would support enshrining DACA protections into law, and encourage the House and Senate to act.
“What remains to be negotiated are the details of border security, with a mutual goal of finalizing all details as soon as possible,” said Schumer and Pelosi. “While both sides agreed that the wall would not be any part of this agreement, the President made clear he intends to pursue it at a later time, and we made clear we would continue to oppose it.”
Here is what C-SPAN caught Schumer telling someone on the Senate floor:
Shumer: “Sorry, just got here. Anything new?
Schumer: “He likes us. He likes me anyway. Look, what we said was exactly accurate. … Here’s what I told him: I said, Mr. President, you’re much better off if you can sometimes step right and sometimes step left. If you have to step just in one direction, you’re boxed. He gets that.”
