(CNSNews.com) - Former Sen. Rick Santorum said at a town hall meeting for presidential candidates that was held today in Nashua, New Hampshire, that part of his policy in dealing with immigration would be to give illegal aliens an ultimatum that he believes would cause them to leave the country.

Santorum told the audience that his view was “that people who are here illegally, must be returned.

“And you say, well, that’s an impossible task. Ladies and gentlemen, it is not,” said Santorum.

“Half the people who are here illegally came here and, or, overstayed their visa. We know who they are,” said Santorum. “They came here legally. They made a promise they would go home and they didn’t.

“And, so, as president of the United States it is very simple,” he said. “You would say: Okay, you have three months to get your act together, and your affairs together, and then you have to leave. If you leave during that 3-month period of time, having overstayed your visa, we are not going to prejudice you, you can sign up and come back and go into the normal course of everybody else.

“But if you don’t, if you don’t go home, then when we find you and remove you then you will never be able to come back to America,” Santorum said.

“Let me assure you, people will leave,” he said. “If you give them that ultimatum, people will leave. And you are not going to have to worry about, you know, deporting people. People will leave.”
