(CNSNews.com) - House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.), whom her Democratic colleagues have nominated to become speaker of the House in January when their party takes over control of the House, said in a statement on Thursday after President Donald Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen pled guilty to lying to Congress that Trump’s “inner circle” has “brazenly lied and covered up the truth.”
“This guilty plea provides additional documented proof that President Trump’s inner circle has brazenly lied and covered up the truth to protect the President,” said Pelosi. “This desperate dishonesty makes all Americans ask what the Russians have on Trump, politically, personally or financially.”
“Donald J. Trump was more involved in discussions over a potential Russian business deal during the presidential campaign than previously known, his former lawyer Michael D. Cohen said Thursday in pleading guilty to lying to Congress,” the New York Times reported today.
“Court documents made public by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, detailed new accusations against Mr. Cohen, the president's former fixer, who already pleaded guilty this year to committing campaign finance violations and financial crimes,” the Times reported. “Mr. Cohen was the point person at the Trump Organization for negotiating a deal for the Moscow project, and on Thursday he admitted lying to congressional investigators about the duration of the negotiations and the extent of the involvement of Mr. Trump -- who is identified in the court documents as ‘Individual 1.’”
Here is the full text of Pelosi’s statement:
“The President’s personal lawyer just admitted to lying on behalf of the President about Trump’s financial ties to Russia.
“This guilty plea provides additional documented proof that President Trump’s inner circle has brazenly lied and covered up the truth to protect the President. This desperate dishonesty makes all Americans ask what the Russians have on Trump, politically, personally or financially.
“The Special Counsel investigation is working, and has returned dozens of indictments against Trump’s team. The Congress must immediately pass legislation to preserve the Special Counsel investigation, which is identical to bipartisan legislation passed by the Senate Judiciary Committee. If Speaker Ryan refuses to take up that bill, House Democrats will fight to include language to protect the investigation in the upcoming must-pass spending bill.
“Neither the President nor his cronies are above the law. Our House Democratic Majority will restore integrity to the Congress, and hold the President and his friends accountable for their dishonesty and deceit.”
