( -- Amazon announced on Tuesday that its Amazon Prime membership program will be offered at a discounted price for customers who receive government assistance through food stamps and related programs.

Amazon Prime membership, which is typically offered for $10.99 per month, will be sold to customers who have a valid Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card for only for $5.99.

According to a statement released by Amazon, Prime membership includes access to “unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows with Prime Video, thousands of playlists and stations with Prime Music, a rotating selection of e-books with Prime Reading, unlimited photo storage and savings on select items and subscriptions.”

“We designed this membership option for customers receiving government assistance to make our everyday selection and savings more accessible, including the many conveniences and entertainment benefits of Prime,” said Prime’s Vice President Greg Greeley.

Although an EBT card is a requirement to qualify for the discount, customers cannot use EBT to pay for their membership.

Amazon also said they plan to add additional ways to qualify in the future for customers that participate in government assistance but do not utilize EBT.

U.S. citizens who live in low-income or poverty levels that do not rely on government benefits or aid are not eligible for the program.
