“You’re making policy based on conjecture,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), a physician, told President Joe Biden’s White House medical advisor, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Thursday at a Senate hearing on COVID-19 response.

Sen. Paul repeatedly asked Dr. Fauci to cite any evidence that people who have been vaccinated against the virus still need to wear a mask because they’re still at risk of contracting the virus again. Dr. Fauci did not respond, other than to say that the threat of presumed “variants” of the virus might still possibly be able to infect the vaccinated.

Sen. Paul said Fauci, who has been vaccinated, was going out in public wearing two masks simply “for show”:

“You’re making policy based on conjecture that there’s going to be a variant, so you want people to wear masks for another couple years. You've been vaccinated and you parade around in two masks for show.”

Paul rebuked Fauci for telling Americans who are immune that they have to continue wearing masks:

“You can't get it again. There is virtually zero percent chance you're going to get it, and yet you are telling people who have had the vaccine, who have immunity, you're defying everything we know about immunity by telling people to wear a mask who have been vaccinated.”

“If you have immunity, they’re theater,” Sen. Paul told the vaccinated, mask-wearing Fauci. “If you already have immunity, you're wearing a mask to give comfort to others. You're not wearing a mask because of any science,” Paul said.

The most effective way to convince Americans to get vaccinated, Paul told Fauci, is to tell them they can stop wearing their masks if they do so.

Sen. Paul: What proof is there that there is significant reinfections with hospitalizations and death from the variants? None in our country. Zero.

Dr. Fauci: Well, because we don't have a prevalent of a variant yet. We're having one -- can I finish? We're having 1.1.7 that's becoming more dominant.

Sen. Paul: You’re making policy based on conjecture that there’s going to be a variant, so you want people to wear masks for another couple years. You've been vaccinated and you parade around in two masks for show.

Dr. Fauci: No.

Sen. Paul: You can't get it again. There is virtually zero percent chance you're going to get it, and yet you are telling people who have had the vaccine, who have immunity, you're defying everything we know about immunity by telling people to wear a mask who have been vaccinated.

Instead, you should be saying: there is no science to say we’re going to have a problem from the large number of people who’ve been vaccinated.

You want to get rid of vaccine hesitancy? Tell them they can quit wearing their mask after they get the vaccine. You want people to get the vaccine, give them a reward instead of telling them that the nanny state’s going to be there for three years more years and you’ve got to wear a mask forever. People don’t want to hear it; there's no science behind it.

Dr. Fauci: Well, let me just state, for the record, that masks are not theater, masks are protective –

Sen. Paul: If you have immunity, they’re theater. If you already have immunity, you're wearing a mask to give comfort to others. You're not wearing a mask because of any science.

Dr. Fauci: I totally disagree with you.
