People’s World is the flagship publication of Communist Party USA. It’s the successor to the Soviet-funded and directed Daily Worker. If you want the pulse of American communism, which, sadly, is not dead, visit the website of People’s World.
And if you go there now, a week after the Irish stunned the world by approving gay marriage, you’ll find a lead article at the communist organ that would have been unthinkable in the 1980s, when Fidel Castro was tossing homosexuals into insane asylums, or the 1950s, when CPUSA was expelling gay members like Harry Hay, or the 1930s, when Stalin was banning homosexuals, or in the 1920s, when Lenin was purging Russia of “homosexualism.” Indeed, you’ll find at the current People’s World a curious week-long lead: a beaming photo of gay Irishmen and supporters celebrating the redefinition of marriage in this onetime bastion of Roman Catholicism where the most prominent export was priests and nuns.
The lead article quotes a happy comrade, the head of Ireland’s Communist Party, who celebrated this “wake-up call,” no doubt relishing the slap at communism’s longtime most reviled foes: the Roman Catholic Church specifically and organized Christianity generally. Communists worldwide are united in this triumph, just as they’ve celebrated every instance where gay marriage is allowing them to do what they’ve wanted to do since literally the time of Marx and Engels: attack religion and abolish the family. Those latter words, in fact, literally appear in The Communist Manifesto, where Marx and Engels underscored this “infamous proposal of the Communists,” as they rightly described it (with exclamation mark): “abolition of the family!”
And once you understand that, you can understand why People’s World is crowing over the vote to fundamentally transform the natural-traditional-biblical Irish family.
Because of the kind of research I do, I read communist publications daily. Thus, I can report a stunning modern phenomenon that I document at length in my new book, Takedown: From Communists to Progressives, How the Left Has Sabotaged Family and Marriage—namely, today’s communist movement is utterly elated with gay marriage.
Yes, communists have become cheerleaders for the gay-rights movement. They constantly push the “GLBTQ” agenda. This can be seen any given week at People’s World or in a perusal of the CPUSA website or major speeches by CPUSA leaders. Their onetime reticence, rejection, and repression of gays are totally gone. They’re gung ho for gay marriage, for transgender issues, for gays adopting children, you name it. And it has gone global. In a jaw-dropping development, even Castro’s Cuba, home of the world’s onetime most “homophobic” tyrant, is holding Gay Pride parades. Fidel himself is said to be an in-the-closet supporter who has even done “gay advocacy work.” Wow.
Confused? You should be. But it makes sense when you dig deeper, and darker.
Efforts by the far left to take down traditional family and marriage have been long at work. Extreme-left radicals have made their arguments and tried different tactics, starting with Marx and Engels and 1800s socialist utopians like Robert Owen and Charles Fourier, and on through cultural Marxists of the Frankfurt School such as Wilhelm Reich and Herbert Marcuse, followed by the likes of Betty Friedan, Kate Millett, and assorted 1960s radicals from Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn to Mark Rudd and Tom Hayden. What were once fringe concepts by dangerous extremists on the far margins of society have become mainstream.
My book Takedown notes how in the not-so-distant past, today’s leftists attacking traditional marriage would have loudly raised their voices but not caused any real damage. They would have been dismissed as cranks, crackpot German atheistic philosophers and campus agitators. But now, with formal legalization of same-sex marriage afoot, they are getting what they’ve wanted for generations: the literal redefinition of family. At long last, they have the vehicle to make it happen: gay marriage—a 21st-century novelty without precedent in human history. Gay marriage is serving as the Trojan horse to secure the final takedown they’ve long desired.
Of course, these old radicals would be dumbfounded to discover modern Americans joining them in rejecting a God-ordained design for marriage and family—but they’d be thrilled nonetheless. And they would be especially delighted at how gay marriage is serving as a stunningly effective tool in attacking what the far left always hated most: religion.
Karl Marx, of course, dubbed religion the “opiate of the masses.” Vladimir Lenin said far worse, insisting that “all worship of a divinity is a necrophilia,” and asserting that, “There can be nothing more abominable than religion.”
Thus, with hatred of religion central to communists’ ideology, gay marriage could be the gift that keeps on giving. If communists were not atheists, they would joyously resound in a loud chorus of Hallelujah!
In all, gay marriage is breathing some life into the veins of what we thought was a communist corpse. After eight years of Ronald Reagan, the collapse of the Berlin Wall, and dissolution of the Soviet Union, communists were depressed, tired of losing. Now, with gay marriage, they are winners again. They at last have something to celebrate.
Who knew that everyday Americans, Mr. and Mrs. Mainstreet, and even Mr. and Mrs. Joe Q. Ireland, could be such outstanding allies in finally securing for communists what they’ve long sought. A fundamental transformation has indeed taken place. I’m almost tempted to congratulate them. It has been a long time coming.
