On Tuesday, the Chicago Tribune reported on a grim statistic following the weekend celebration of Father’s Day – 306 homicides this year in the city, including 55 people shot - 13 fatally - from Friday afternoon through early Monday morning.

“So far this year, close to 1,800 people have been shot across the city and more than 200 of those wounded have died from their wounds, according to records kept by the Chicago Tribune,” the paper reported on its website on Tuesday. “A total of 306 people have been killed this year, by shooting, stabbing or other means.”

The paper reported that at least 28 people were wounded - three fatally - in shootings that took place between 8:30 a.m. Saturday and 4:30 p.m. Sunday – “the equivalent of somebody shot every 43 minutes.”

Chicago has some of the nation’s toughest gun control laws dating back to the 1970s, according to the Chicago Historical Society.

In May, CNN reported that the President Barack Obama presidential library would be located on the South Side of Chicago.

"With a library and a foundation on the South Side of Chicago, not only will we be able to encourage and effect change locally but what we can also do is attract the world to Chicago," Obama said in a video posted on CNN about the choice of Chicago for his presidential library.
